Mayonaka is a dark drama about two lonely strangers set against Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station — the busiest train station in the world. Kumi is an aspiring young singer living as a cyber-homeless out of a 24 hour internet cafe. Depressed and without hope, she’s fixated her happiness on the idea of either losing her virginity or killing herself on her birthday night. Meanwhile, Akira is an overworked and miserable salaryman who’s decided to quit his job but is obsessed with confronting his boss whom he feels is the source of his humiliation. Absent from home for months and his wife threatening divoice, he must also decide to go home by the last train. In a chance meeting, Kumi and Akira meet in Shinjuku Station and make an intimate and emotional journey together to the end of midnight.

ACTORS

The actors who participated in this film are all dedicated professionals. They took on the challenge of working with a foreign filmmaker despite cultural and language barriers. Each brought their unique qualities to their roles. Filming was  done all at night in real locations around Shinjuku. This required that the actors were prepared while also appearing spontaneous to fit in with the real life surroundings. 

NANAMI AKATSUKI

Nanami Akatsuki was born in Okinawa, Japan. She’s  be active as an actor and solo singer from 2019. In 2020, a band that combines Japanese traditional instruments and heavy metal as the lead vocalis of “KAGURAMUSOU”. “MAYONAKA” was her first acting role.

MASAKI NAITO

Masaki Naito studied acting in New York and is currently based in Tokyo with a career of over 20 years. After returning to Japan in 2015, he has appeared in numerous works such as ” Mozart in the Jungle”, “AI Amok” and “World War.” Japanese epic films such as “AI Amok”, “Farewell Song” and “Barbara”, ” among others.

TSUYOSHI TAKASHIRO

Tsuyoshi Takashiro has been active in movies, television, and theater. He’s received 3 awards including Best Narration
Award at the Monaco International Film Festival in the film “Hate-heno-tabi”, which he played lead roll . He’s has also performed on stage in France, Spain and the United States.

ANGELO MINURO KAWAJIRI

Angelo Minoru Kawajiri is known for his work on Balalaika – Dalla Russia col pallone (2018), Mai dire Mondiali FIFA (2018) and Akihabara@Deep 2.0 (2020). He grew up between Italy and Japan. He is the son of actor Makoto Kawajiri appeared in many 80s/90s German movies and commercials

SHINICHI SHIRAHATA

Shinichi Shirahata is active in TV variety shows, theatrical performances, and movies. A veteran actor of a wide range of genres because of his unique personality. He is known for his expressionless uncle in a TV Show . He is also an acting instructor at New Cinema Workshop in Tokyo.

ANTONIO ANGELOV

Antonio Angelov is an actor, known for “Undercover” (2011),  and “Two Homelands” (2019) and “Mayonaka” (2021). A native of Bulgaria with a passion for video games and karate brought him to Japan. He’s often cast for television work in comedy and historical recreations. He’s also a black belt in karate and a Bulgarian, English and Japanese translator.

SCENES

Mayonaka was filmed over two weeks from 6pm to 12am in the Shinjuku Station area. The story is centered around the Okubo train line and all locations were within 15 minutes of the station.  Filming Mayonaka was an adventure of the real where theory is tested against reality. The film attempts to take contrasting elements of fiction and documentary, narrative and arthouse techniques to make a spiritual entertainment. For filmmakers and film lovers, movies are akin to a secular church where the sublime and vulgar can be a mirror of life.
